Terror Attack in London
London was hit today by a barbaric act of terrorism. The number of fatalities being reported is currently between 28 and 40. Unsubstantiated claims assign the blame to a previously unknown Islamic extremist terrorist group calling themselves “Secret Group of Al Qaeda's Jihad in Europe.”

Europe to Aid U.S. Tech
The European Parliament has rejected a measure intended to legalize software patents in the European Union. As a result, the world will have fairly unrestricted access to technologies invented in Europe while Europe continues to honor U.S. patents.

Neil Steinberg is a Bigot
Neil Steinberg, a columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, is a confused bigot whose bad advice and thoughtless rhetoric should be enough to condemn him to a fate of swabbing the deck on the world’s biggest ship of fools. Neil apparently wants to ban cigarettes and legalize heroin.

World’s Largest Freshwater Fish
Sure, fishing is a fun hobby, and I even keep a large marine aquarium humming in my family room full of various corals and colorful saltwater fishes. But when a buddy sent me a link today announcing the most recent catch of the “World’s Largest Freshwater Fish,” I was skeptical.

Masks Count Too!
Brian J. Noggle this morning gives us all a little laugh by catching a comical contradiction in the media. Or was the media just reporting a contradiction delivered by the police? The title of the article seems to pass the blame…

Some Roosevelt Wisdom
The following is a quote by Theodore Roosevelt. You’ll note that it has not been framed in any context of current events. That’s because it doesn’t need to be. The relevance should be plainly obvious.

P2P: Good to Grow
While many technology news outlets claim Monday’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in the MGM vs. Grokster case is a major loss for peer-to-peer file swapping, I completely disagree. As this technology matures, legal decisions such as the one made Monday are necessary to ensure its survival as a legitimate service.

Orlando: Bye Bye WiFi
Sometimes, a pilot project is all it takes to put the brakes on a bad idea. Orlando’s government-sponsored, “free” WiFi network is a perfect example. Orlando is shutting down its service because adoption rates simply do not justify the required monthly expenditure.

Syria Harbors. Finally!
The U.S. is finally getting tougher with Syria. In a push for punitive action against Syria, US secretary of state, Condoleeza Rice discussed diplomatic action against Syria. Well, it’s a start.

Gitmo Survey - Just End the Debate Already
With all the recent press coverage of the prisoner treatment at Guantanamo Bay, it is easy to assume that this is an issue deserving much attention. Encouragingly, the vast majority of American citizens are not nearly as concerned about Gitmo as the small number of generally “anti-anything related to George Bush” crowd that demands unending press coverage of their opinion.

Cities Should Back Away From WiFi
Lobbyists are pressuring Congress to decide whether or not it is appropriate for local governments to become wireless Internet Service Providers. It would seem that some people just march blindly into socialism. Government controlled ISPs are not a solution for any legitimate problem.

Solar Sail Still Untested
Russian-made Cosmos 1 was launched into space yesterday aboard a multi-stage Russian Volna rocket. The purpose of the mission was to test an experimental propulsion technology involving a solar sail with remote laser-assist. Today, Russian space officials confirm that the test was most likely a failure.

Biased Judge Jackson
Former U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson is still ranting about Microsoft antitrust issues, even after the U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that he “seriously tainted the proceedings” after his June 2000 ruling which demanded the split of Microsoft into two companies. The question that must be asked is why CNet is covering the opinions of such an overtly biased and clearly disgraceful attorney who represents everything the U.S. court system should work to avoid.

Canadians Appear to Understand Copyright
Peer to peer network services used in conjunction with rampant CD and DVD copying has forced the American government to pass laws that help guarantee a content owner’s right to control distribution. The Canadian government has seen the necessity for similar protections, and has introduced new legislation specifically addressing the issue.

BBC Boots Real, Competes With Microsoft
The BBC has announced that it will release its own video codec. After years of work, the subsidized BBC will release software that competes directly with Microsoft, Apple, and Real, with one predictable slant. The software is being released under an open-source license, and will be called Dirac, because the name stuck.
