John Thune's UN Flip-Flop

Mary Clare Jalonick, of the Associated Press, makes it clear today that Republicans can pull their own fish-out-of-water flip-flop moves with the same grace and elegance we saw during Kerry’s assault attempt on the White House.  This time, the stunts are performed by Senator John Thune (R-SD).

As the AP reports today, Senator John Thune (R-SD) announced that he intends to vote against John Bolton for the position of ambassador to the United Nations.  Let’s not forget that just one month ago, Thune was wholeheartedly enthusiastic about voting for Bolton when he appeared on “Hardball with Chris Matthews.“

Sometimes politicians change their mind because they learn new information.  Sometimes, they were just confused to begin with.  Other times, they have something to hide.  In Thune’s case, it would appear as though he is doing this in a fit of anger.  Why?  The assumption is simple revenge.  Thune has agreed to fight to keep Ellsworth Air Force base open, despite it being listed as one of the military bases currently scheduled for closure.  Of course, he has no chance of succeeding in this effort, and his actions are nothing more than a childish tantrum.

Thune has an agenda that is contrary to what is best for America.  He is fighting a losing battle to keep Ellsworth open, and he knows it.  While the reason behind his actions may be slightly more honorable than recent Democratic slowdown attempts, it nonetheless represents just another political tantrum that will cost the American taxpayer.  At least Thune is going to vote, which is his job.  However, it is unlikely that Republicans will get the votes they needs to end the latest Democrat [its not a] filibuster, so Thune may have to wait until June to cast his angry vote.
