Michael Dell, a prominent business leader recognizes the business strategy that Apple Computer is employing. And what he recognizes is the same thing I’ve been saying since the Apple/Intel announcement on June 6th.
I’ve been saying that Apple’s decision to go with Intel processors represents a long-term business strategy to move Apple technology into the PC mainstream. Lots of people disagree with me, but I’m sticking to my theory.
Today Michael Dell, the CEO of Dell Computer, made an announcement that clearly demonstrates his thinking on the subject at hand. And wouldn’t you know, he agrees with my position. In an email covered by CNet, Dell states:
"If Apple decides to open the Mac OS to others, we would be happy to offer it to our customers,"
Well, of course. My previous posts suggest that this is one of Apple’s long-term goals. See my previous statements here:
Intel To Supply Apple
Macs Will Run Windows
Dell already gives customers the choice of Windows or Linux. If Steve Jobs really believes that his operating system is superior, why would he not want to participate in this overwhelmingly successful distribution channel?
As usual, the only arguments against this plan are technical. Unfortunately, the Apple geeks just don’t understand that technical issues are solved by engineers working to enable a business strategy. And finally, Apple seems to have a business strategy that makes sense.
