Apple Innovates!

Apple Computer has done it again.  With a stroke of genius from the creative mind of Steve Jobs comes a revolutionary new computer pointing device.

Yes, innovation never stops over at Apple, where cool, new, and flashy seem to be the keyword criteria for all new products.  An article today on News.com gives us the details on this wondrous new technological marvel:

Dubbed Mighty Mouse, the new $49 pointer has a 360-degree scroll wheel and can be programmed to recognize a click on either the left or right side. For Apple purists, it can also act as a single-button mouse

Imagine that!  TWO BUTTONS AND A SCROLL WHEEL!  Whatever will they think up next!  Will the wonders of ingenuity never cease at Apple?  How long until the PC industry “steals” this idea?

Too bad they couldn’t make it wireless.  If you ask me, it looks like a bar of soap.

I don't know if I would call it innovative, but it does have some cool features that you are glossing over. The Mighty Mouse doesn't have a scroll wheel, but a scroll trackball so it allows you to scroll diagonally as well. I'm not really sure how useful it is, but it is cool.

Technically it's a 4 button mouse (even though it has no buttons) as the scroll ball has a button under it (just like most wheel mice) and you can squeeze the sides to activate a 4th trigger.

It is Windows compatible, if it was using Bluetooth wireless I would have to try it out, but its a silly wired mouse. I have gone wireless and I really like not having another cable to contend with.

For as long as I can remember, I have been dying to scroll diagonally. This will make navigating oblique web pages a dream!

The point is you can scroll in any direction you need to. Its something that hasnt been done before so theres no telling what sorts of useful things can be done with it. Web page scrolling is only one function.

I can see using this in like word or excel to scroll between menus by rolling left and right and submenus by scrolling up and down, click down to select, all while using the mouse pointer for other functions like selecting text or cells.

Or even a radial menu that appears when the trackball is pressed with the most commonly used functions.

As for wireless thats planned for the next version.

They're just keeping it simple right now since it's a new design and they need it to work reliably more than anything.
